PHOTOS: Sponsored dog walk raises £1800 for Morecambe charity Unique Kidz & Co

The Unique Kidz & Co sponsored dog walk 'Wagz and Walkz'

A sponsored dog walk has raised more than £1800 to help disabled children, young adults and their families.

The Wagz and Walkz Challenge saw dogs and their owners walk a total of 50 miles each during March and share their progress on Facebook, whilst asking for donations for the Morecambe-based Unique Kidz & Co charity.

More than 30 of our canine friends were signed up for challenge, with owners keeping the group updated with lots of pictures, route maps and screenshots of how many miles they were racking up.

Every dog has hit or is well on-track to exceed their 50-mile target.

To celebrate the success of Unique Kidz & Co’s first event for dogs, a group of the four-legged fundraisers met up for a pack walk on Sunday March 26.

They walked together from the Unique Kidz and Co building on Woodhill Lane, Morecambe up to the Stone Jetty where they posed for a lovely group photo.

Proudly wearing their Wagz & Walkz bandanas, they attracted lots of attention from other pedestrians and dog walkers and even inspired some donations from the people they encountered.

Chris Pilkington, fundraiser, said “Everyone at Unique Kidz and Co is so grateful to all dogs and their humans for taking on the Wagz and Walkz challenge.

"To raise £1,800 is an amazing amount and will go a long way to support the amazing young people who come to have fun and make friends here.

“We are very pleased to say there were no incidents and barely even a bark as the dogs happily met each other and trotted along in a very cheerful pack.

"Not all the dogs who took on the challenge could be there as some of them live as far away as Fleetwood and Durham, but for the eleven dogs who made it, there was nothing but happy, waggy tails.”

Kelly Towers, Practice Manager from Burch Tree Vets who sponsored the event, said: “We feel passionately about pet care and jumped at the chance to get involved.

"Meeting some of the children was a highlight of ours, they came to visit us at our Carnforth practice and met some of our pets who happily helped with some vet surgeon role play. We also held a special teddy bear clinic."

"The benefit of a walk is immeasurable, whether it's 10 minutes or two hours - it has a huge positive impact on our mental health. Not forgetting the health benefits for our furry canine four-legged friends!”

Unique Kidz and Co is a Morecambe based charity which runs a range of services for disabled children, young adults and their families. The charity was set up in 2009 by two parents of children with disabilities.

It currently supports over 120 local children and young adults through its afterschool clubs, holiday clubs, daytime support service, siblings group and stay and play sessions.

Unique Kidz and Co relies heavily on fundraising and grants to be able to continue providing its life changing services. The charity needs to raise at least £180,000 each year to continue.
