New colour coded wheelie bins offered to Lancaster and Morecambe residents

New wheelie bins with colour coded lids are available to order in the Lancaster and Morecambe district.

Lancaster City Council is offering the tall grey wheelie bins if people want to replace their smaller green recycling boxes for plastics, cardboard and glass, at a charge of £27.60 per bin.

The council says around 1,000 residents of the Lancaster and Morecambe district have ordered the new bins after they trialled them in Heysham last year.

A new grey wheeled bin with yellow lid is available to recycle paper and cardboard, and one with a red lid for plastics, glass and cans.

A green-lidded bin is available for green waste, but this can only be ordered if you have a current valid garden waste subscription with Lancaster City Council. This costs £41 per bin for a year period.

Replacement smaller recycling boxes will still be available to order, where space at properties is limited, as will replacement or additional grey lid wheelie bins for non-recyclable waste.

“To assist those residents who want to recycle more of their household waste and reduce the amount sent to landfill, we are now offering them the opportunity to order one or more wheelie bins to replace their recycling boxes," said Councillor Joanne Ainscough, Lancaster City Council cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services (pictured below).

“This follows a successful trial last year in an area of Heysham that saw recycling rates improved and less waste sent to landfill.

“Since the new wheelie bins became available on request, around 1,000 residents have placed orders."

New properties (2023 onwards) will be given three grey wheeled bins with colour-coded lids.

Delivery of new boxes can take up to 10 days.

New smaller recycling boxes cost £9.60 each.
