Motorists in North Lancashire warned to take care on roads in icy weather

Fell Road in Torrisholme, Morecambe, on Saturday morning

Motorists have been warned to be careful on the roads in freezing temperatures across North Lancashire.

Local police and Lancashire County Council have both advised people to take extra care on the roads today (Saturday December 10) and over the next few days.

The Met Office has forecast more cold weather this weekend with a risk of sleet.

Many local roads were very icy on Saturday morning.

Main priority routes across the Lancaster and Morecambe district were scheduled for gritting by Lancashire County Council overnight on December 9.

But we had reports that some roads were still icy, particularly side roads and in village areas.

A county council spokesperson said: "Routes in Lancaster and Morecambe were gritted at 6pm last night with crews staying on to patrol and monitor.

"Some of them were also done again this morning from 7am due to the snow and ice.

"With the variable conditions we've had even roads which have been gritted can remain icy.

"The gritters are due out again in Lancaster and Morecambe from 6pm tonight."

You can see a map of gritted roads and find out information on how to keep warm this winter, at the county council's website.

Both Morecambe and Lancaster's scheduled football matches today have been postponed due to the icy conditions.
