A Morecambe man has vowed to compete a challenge to walk a million steps in a month after breaking both his wrists in a fall.
Derek Quinn is raising money for a memorial garden at the Mazuma Stadium, and had made a great start to the challenge, racking up 304,325 steps and covering 211 kilometres in his first eight days, before the accident suffered while he was on holiday in Spain, which has required him to have an operation.
Quinny is now back home recuperating, and is hoping to be back pounding the streets as soon as he can.
He said: ‘’Thanks to everyone for their kind messages, they have meant so much.
‘’I’m glad to be out of hospital after the operations I must admit. There are some pins and screws in there so it is going to be a bit strange for a few weeks. Thanks to my family for all of their support - I don’t know what I’d do without them.
‘’My goalkeeping and wicket keeping days are probably over but I have learned one fingered left-handed typing quite quickly!’’

Speaking to Beyond Radio before the challenge began, Derek said: ‘’I am aiming to walk one million steps, which is roughly 460 miles, to raise money towards the building of a memorial garden at Morecambe Football Club's Memorial Stadium.
‘’The Memorial Garden was first discussed a couple of years ago and pre Covid by the Shrimps Trust and is something that would be a fantastic addition to the club and the community. It will be a place where people can honour and remember their loved ones and a place for reflection.’’
