Morecambe school pupils learn about local politics on visit from county councillors

County councillors Lizzi Collinge, Alan Cullens and Margaret Pattison visit the Bay Leadership Academy in Morecambe

School pupils in Morecambe have been given an insight into local politics during a visit by three county councillors.

Lizzi Collinge, Margaret Pattison and Alan Cullens visited the Bay Leadership Academy (formerly Heysham High School) for an assembly on politics.

The Academy’s year 8 students (age 12-13) were joined by year 5 pupils (age 9-10) from Sandylands and Morecambe Bay Primary Schools.

The councillors gave the children an overview of what Lancashire County Council does, information on the different levels of government – parliament, county council, district and parish councils.

The pupils then challenged the councillors with all kinds of questions covering topics including the Eden Project, Frontierland, and the biggest challenges facing councils and councillors.

"It was fantastic to meet the students at the Bay Leadership Academy," said County Councillor Collinge, who represents Lancaster East and is standing as the Labour candidate for Morecambe and Lunesdale in the next general election.

"They asked such thoughtful questions and obviously care very much about their local area. We have some fantastic future politicians coming through in Morecambe."

Margaret Pattison is a county councillor for Labour for Morecambe Central and also sits on Lancaster City Council and Morecambe Town Council.

Alan Cullens is a Conservative who represents Hoghton with Wheelton on Lancashire County Council, and is also the council chairman.
