Morecambe RNLI unveil ‘fallen heroes’ board

The Morecambe RNLI crew have unveiled a special board to honour the memory of former members who have passed away.

The board honours RNLI crew members who went above and beyond in their years of dedicated service to saving lives at sea, with the board recognising Honorary Secretary Keith Willacy, Commander Michael Wood, Lifeboat Operations Manager Mike Guy, and Commander Harry Roberts MBE.

In total, the men honoured racked up a combined total of 84 years dedicated to volunteering.

The board was produced by Walkers Woodworkers, with Mather Signs supplying the lettering.

A spokesperson for Morecambe RNLI, said: ‘’The RNLI at Morecambe is humbled to have had many volunteers over the years who have served their local community in keeping people safe whilst out on the bay.

‘’As a volunteer we are aware of the impact on their family and social life. It’s never predictable. One minute you could be out on a family celebration or catching up with old friends that you haven’t seen in such a long time then the pager goes off. These volunteers drop everything and will head down to the station for the next callout whatever that maybe and Morecambe has had some big jobs over the years.''

‘’They never know what they may face when they respond to a shout whether that is in some of the harshest sea fairing conditions they will drive themselves forward to save those lives all whilst at home family and friends will wonder if their loved ones committed to the rescue will themselves make it back safely.  The natural thing would be to think what could happen to me whilst responding but this is when training kicks in and the selfless thought of what may or may not happen disappears.

‘’Sadly, some of those volunteers are no longer with us yet they helped in creating the spirit of Morecambe RNLI. They gave up their precious time away from friends, family and loved ones time which sadly which they never got back all to keep people safe on the bay and when required saved lives.

‘’We dedicate today’s unveiling to their family and loved ones they leave behind.’’
