Morecambe Promenade street party and beacon lighting announced for Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations

A huge Promenade picnic street party and a beacon lighting have been announced as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Morecambe.

Morecambe Town Council is organising the Morecambe Big Lunch on Sunday, June 5 from 1pm to 4pm on the Promenade.

The town council will provide tables along 2,500ft of the Promenade and say they anticipate 2,000 or more people will take part.

They are aiming to break the record for the longest Jubilee picnic ever recorded in England.

The event will be part of a four-day long national bank holiday weekend from June 2-5 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne.

The Bank Holiday will begin with the Trooping of the Colour at Horse Guards Parade in central London on June 2.

Beacons will also be lit across the UK, along with the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and Overseas Territories.

Morecambe’s Beacon Lighting Ceremony will take place on the Stone Jetty from 6pm to 10pm on June 2 with live music, pyrotechnics, fireworks, food stalls, and a DJ, with the beacon being lit at 9.45pm.

Luke Trevaskis, chief executive of Morecambe Town Council, said “social activities have made a comeback this year and celebrating our local connections is more important than ever.

"The town council is incredibly proud to be part of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and hosting Morecambe’s Big Lunch to support our residents will be a special day to mark our togetherness.”

Cllr Tricia Heath, chairman of Morecambe Town Council’s Festival and Events Committee, said “this event will be remembered for years to come and is set to be the longest Jubilee picnic ever recorded in England.”

The Big Lunch is the brainchild of the Eden Project, and is the UK’s annual date to celebrate and give thanks to communities.

Peter Stewart, executive director of the Eden Project, said “There are more reasons than ever to get together this year and we’re really excited to be bringing the spirit of the Jubilee to Morecambe - and indeed into every neighbourhood - with The Big Jubilee Lunch this June."

Tables for up to six persons are available to book here  - priced at £10 each - with all proceeds being donated to charity.

Attendees are reminded to bring their own picnic and chairs

The event is also supported by Lancaster City Council, EDF and the Eden Project.
