A Morecambe DJ has released a book about the most unlikely gig of his 50-year career.
Steve Middlesbrough's new book 'Sentosa Island Survivors Club' tells the incredible story of how he played music to thousands on a Singapore beach during a typhoon.
This historic event happened 30 years ago and Steve describes it as "the most difficult and demanding, the funniest and most emotional" of his 52 years as a DJ.
What made the gig all the more remarkable, was that in 1993, Singapore had barely experienced Western pop music due to strict state censorship rules.
Then out of the blue, a little-known mobile DJ from the Lancashire coast was given just a few weeks to put together South East Asia's first ever all-night music video beach party on the paradise island of Sentosa.
The Christmas 1993 show was the brainchild of Steve's friend, Morecambe music promoter Barry Lucas.
The story of how the two of them pulled off what was described in The Visitor at the time (see cutting below) as 'Singapore's version of Live Aid', in a tropical rainstorm, has to be read to be believed!
Steve Middlesbrough has been a DJ at well over 7,500 gigs during his career, playing at countless venues and functions across the Lancaster and Morecambe district.
The dad-of-four is also an event promoter who has run numerous music festivals in the local area, most notably the Summerbreeze events on Morecambe Promenade from 1996-2000.
