'Morecambe' appears on new series of hit Netflix show 'The Crown'

Morecambe has appeared on the new series of a popular drama on the life of the Royal family - but not as we know it.

Queen Elizabeth II, played by Imelda Staunton, is seen cutting a ribbon to open a dairy - supposedly in the seaside town - in the latest season of hit show 'The Crown', which premiered on Netflix on Wednesday.

However, eagle-eyed viewers noticed that something wasn't quite right with Her Majesty's visit to Morecambe, which airs in Episode 1 of Season 5.

The town's name was incorrectly spelled 'Morecombe' on a vehicle in the scene (see image below).

Secondly, Warton Dairies was not a business in Morecambe, or 'Morecombe'.

The Queen, who died in September 2022 after reigning for 70 years, visited Morecambe several times during her lifetime, most notably in 1999 when she unveiled the Eric Morecambe Statue.

The Crown is described as "inspired by real events" and a "fictional dramatisation telling the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign".

The mis-spelling of Morecambe has created a stir on social media, with many Twitter users pointing it out.

Earlier in the episode, the Queen mentions Morecambe by name, when she talks about a "day of cutting ribbons in Morecambe" before taking a holiday.

The Crown is one of Netflix's most popular shows and portrays the life of Queen Elizabeth from 1947 until the 21st century.

The drama has had some criticism for its historical inaccuracies and at times unflattering portrayal of the Royal family, although it has also been praised for its acting, writing, direction, cinematography and production values.

It has twice won the Golden Globe award in America for Best Television Series - Drama.

The latest series also stars Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; Dominic West as Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.
