Met Office Yellow Weather Warning for North Lancs

The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for our region that could cause travel disruption and flood damage over the next couple of days.

The Yellow warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain comes into place at 9.00am Tuesday morning until 6.00am Wednesday morning. The Met Office have said that as a result:

  • spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and possibly some road closures
  • where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater or lightning strikes

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during Tuesday across much of Northern England. These will last well into the night across North-West England in particular where they could be prolonged in places. 20 to 30 mm of rain is possible in around 1 or 2 hours, and a few places could see around 60 mm in 3 to 6 hours . Lightning and hail may pose additional hazards in a few locations.

The Met Office suggest that those in flood prone areas may wish to keep a close watch on the developing situation and take precautions to protect property where necessary.
