Lancaster park play area to reopen after £60,000 revamp

The Greaves Park play area is set to reopen on Saturday

A play area in a Lancaster park will have a grand reopening after a revamp costing around £60,000.

The Friends of Greaves Park are inviting the public to the launch of the new play area on Saturday June 10 at 10am.

There will be refreshments, games for children and a tour of Greaves Park.

Work to upgrade the play park began in November 2022.

Lancaster City Council said that figures were still being finalised but the cost is around £55,000 for the new play equipment, with surfacing and drainage works in the region of £6,480.

"The city council has been working with (Councillor) Abi Mills and the Friends of Greaves Park to raise funds to refurbish/renew the play park along with installing new drainage," said a council spokesperson.

"Initial works began in November 2022 and the council’s playground team provided their labour in kind to ensure costs were kept down to fit all the new equipment and resurface the play area.”

The Friends of Greaves Park thanked the Greaves Park pub and the city council for their support with the opening event.

Abi Mills, treasurer, said: “The Friends of Greaves Park are incredibly excited about the new play park and can’t wait for it to be open to all to play in.

"The project has taken a couple of years to come to fruition, with various consultations to ensure we were putting in equipment that we knew the community wanted.

"Everyone said they wanted more swings, so we have seven different swings in the park - all of to suit different ages and abilities.

"It was a slow process to apply for various pots of funding, but we are proud that we managed to raise just over £60,000 for phase one of the project.

"We would like to thank all the funders who made this project possible, and the support from Lancaster City Council.

"Phase two is still being worked on - which will be a double zip wire - the first one in the area.

"If you would like to get more involved in our friendly Friends of group, come and chat on Saturday!”
