Lancaster MP backs ‘partygate’ report, Morecambe MP doesn't vote

The Lancaster MP has endorsed the findings of the ‘partygate’ report, while the Morecambe MP didn't take part in last night’s Commons vote.

Cat Smith was one of 354 members of parliament to back a report by the privileges committee which found the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson knowingly misled parliament multiples times over parties in Downing Street during the COVID pandemic.

A total of 118 Conservatives voted for the report, but David Morris was one of 225 MPs who either abstained from, or were unable to attend the vote, while seven MPs voted against backing the report’s findings.

Mr Morris told Beyond Radio he was unable to be present in the Commons when the vote took place as he is attending the Council of Europe summer plenary session in Strasbourg.

Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak abstained.

A debate was held in the Commons on Monday afternoon asked MPs to consider the report, which found the former prime minister knowingly misled parliament multiple times with his statements about gatherings in Number 10 during lockdown.

In its damning report, the committee recommended that Mr Johnson should have served a 90-day suspension from the Commons had he not resigned as an MP just days earlier.

The debate and vote comes after the committee's damning verdict issued last week, found Mr Johnson guilty of impugning the committee and being complicit in a "campaign of intimidation" against its members.

The former prime minister immediately hit back at what he called a "deranged conclusion" and branded the committee's report a "charade", adding its investigation had delivered "what is intended to be the final knife-thrust in a protracted political assassination".

Beyond Radio also contacted the office of Mr Morris to ask for his comments when the report was first published, but at time of publication of this article, had not received a response to our request.
