Lancaster man clocks up 1,500 consecutive days of running

Michael 'Mikes' Roy

A Lancaster fundraiser has achieved an incredible milestone of running for 1,500 consecutive days.

Michael (Mikes) Roy reached his 1,500th day of running on Wednesday and has no intention of stopping!

Since January 1 2019, he has clocked up around 7,500 miles and has raised thousands for local and national charities.

“To think that I’ve run every day for 1,500 days is pretty crazy!” Mikes told Beyond Radio.

“There are no plan to stop this. Running is part of my life now. I can’t imagine not getting out for a run, even when I’m on holiday or feeling ill. I just get out there and run – I just love it.”

He was recognised for his running and fundraising last May when he won The Visitor Sunshine Award for Community Sport.

On day 500, Mikes raised around £600 for the NHS and upon reaching the 1000-day mark, he raised over £1,000 for the Christie.

The latter is close to Mikes’ heart.

“My friend Adam, who I run with, is from Manchester and was in the Christie. He’s a big inspiration to me for beating cancer.”

St John’s Hospice is the charity that Mikes is raising money for at the moment to mark his 1,500th day of running, with £900 raised so far.

In between reaching these milestones, Mikes has raised money for Animal Care, Diabetes UK and he took part in a charity boxing match, supporting Shine for Sian.

It’s not just in the local area that Mikes has been, or will be, running. Later this year, he’ll be taking part in his ninth Great North Run and his second London Marathon, representing his club Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club. Mikes has run eight marathons since he started running as a hobby in 2010!

When Mikes was speaking to us the day before reaching 1,500 days, he was suffering a groin strain but was carrying on regardless!

“I did a 16 mile run on Sunday and after it, I felt a bit of discomfort. But through running every day, I’ve learnt how to mange things like that – it’s the same with illnesses and colds. If I’m feeling down one day, I won’t be sprinting out of the door, I know my own body.

“I’ve had a few injuries (in the 1,500 days) but I’ve managed to run through them all.”

Mikes has the following and support of many people, in particular his mum Marion.

“She absolutely supports me in everything that I do, she’s always there at the finish line. She’s been a massive part of my running everyday and in general.

“I originally got into running in 2010 to lose weight, that’s how my journey started, I lost over four stone and it’s just gone on from there really.”
