Lancaster high street branch of Barclays bank to close

The Barclays branch in Lancaster will close in April

Barclays bank has announced it will be closing its Lancaster city centre branch in April.

The branch on the corner of Market Street and New Street will shut its doors on April 25.

Barclays has said this is due to the changing habits of customers who now mainly use online or telephone banking.

They said that 93 per cent of people who use the Lancaster branch have also banked using their app, online and by phone, and fewer than 10 regular customers use this branch exclusively for their banking.

The nearest Barclays branches to Lancaster with cashier and self-service will now be in Kendal and Preston.

The bank said they plan to open a 'Barclays Local' cashless banking site in Lancaster, so they will still have a presence in the city.

They have begun to write to customers to inform them that the Market Street branch (pictured below) will be closing.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, with the majority of people preferring to bank online, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers. This is reflected at Lancaster, where we are delivering new ways to support our customers and the community with options for those who need in-person services.

Barclays said they "will be proactively engaging with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally" and will offer "virtual digital support sessions for customers wishing to explore digital banking and other alternatives to branch based banking".

"We’ll be working with the local community to understand the impact of closing this branch," says a statement on the Barclays website.

"Once we’ve gathered feedback, we’ll publish the results in a booklet called ‘Branch closure feedback’, which you can get from your branch or online at home.barclays/ukbranchclosures

"We’ll be here for you – just in a different way. We want to reassure you that we’re here to help.

"We’ll stay in your community and you’ll be able to talk to us in person. We’re finalising the details of where we’ll be based, and when, to support you with your banking, and we‘ll share the details locally once confirmed.

"We’ll be available to help you with things like day-to-day banking queries and helping you manage your money, though there won’t be access to cash at this site."

Here is a sign outside Lancaster Barclays informing customers of the closure.

The Morecambe branch of Barclays closed in 2020 and the Lancaster University branch shut in 2021.

The Carnforth branch shut in 2022, with Barclays instead opening a limited service at the Royal Station Hotel in the town after huge public opposition.

Barclays closed 157 branches in 2023 and has announced further closures across the UK for 2024 and 2025.
