Lancaster Grand Theatre restoration work shortlisted for award

Restoration work to transform the outside of the Lancaster Grand Theatre has been shortlisted for an award.

The work on the Grand facade has been nominated in the Conservation and Regeneration category of the North West Regional Construction Awards 2023 and the Lancashire Sub-Regional Project of the Year.

Structural and render repairs, replacement windows, gutters and advertising boards, a new paint colour scheme and new lighting and signage have been taking place since 2022 and are almost complete.

The awards results will be revealed at a ceremony in Liverpool on Thursday July 6.

The repairs and improvements to the Grand were as a result of a joint project involving the theatre and its owners Lancaster Footlights, HPA Chartered Architects, Duckett Building Services, Clach Conservation Engineering and the Lancaster High Streets Heritage Action Zone funded by Historic England and Lancaster City Council.

The works were also further supported by a number of local contractors and suppliers, as well as wider repairs to the building carried out under earlier phases by Mather and Ellis Stonemasons.

Mike Hardy, chair of the Lancaster Footlights, said it was "absolutely amazing" to be shortlisted for the award.

"It's well deserved, the outside of the theatre is now totally waterproof and looks absolutely stunning," said Mr Hardy.

The Grand opened in 1782 and is the third oldest operating theatre in the country.
