Lancaster boy who was hit by police car discharged from hospital after "overwhelming support"

Tom has been discharged from hospital just under two months after being injured

A boy who was injured when he was hit by a police car in Lancaster has been discharged from hospital.

Tom went home yesterday just under two months after the incident on Owen Road in Lancaster.

His family have thanked Alder Hey children's hospital and the community for their "overwhelming support" during Tom's recovery.

Celebrities have rallied round to record messages of support for Tom, who had been on life support and in a coma.

They included Morecambe's world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, Spiderman actor Tom Holland (see clip below), singer Russell Watson and stars of soaps Coronation Street and EastEnders.

The 'You Can Do It Tom' Facebook page has been packed with clips of support for Tom.

A post on the page on Friday said: "After 8 weeks and 1 day, Tom's been discharged today!

"Thank you so much to all the wonderful staff and carers who have taken care of Tom the last few weeks.

"From the initial paramedics, who attended the scene, to the Lancaster RLI crew for emergency care before his transfer to the amazing care of Alder Hey.

"All of you have played a major part in saving Tom's life and we can't thank you enough.

"Thanks to the local community for your overwhelming support and to the dozens of celebrities who took the time to send videos of support.

"Every single video and message has been a huge support with Tom's recovery.

"Final thanks goes to Ronald McDonald Children's Charity for taking away the worry and stress of hotel accommodation costs with their amazing 'house' on site.

"You've done it Tom. Thank you again to everyone."

TV presenters Steph McGovern and Gemma Atkinson were among those who sent messages to Tom.

Tom was injured on the evening of Thursday May 25.

The incident happened just before 8.30pm on Owen Road in Lancaster at the junction with Torrisholme Road and involved a marked police Peugeot 308 hatchback which was responding to an emergency call.

Tom was taken by ambulance to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and later transferred to Alder Hey in Liverpool.

Police said they have referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who will be carrying out an independent investigation.
