Investigation after villagers lose water supply in Overton

Villagers in Overton lost their water supply for several hours during the cold weather on Thursday morning.

Multiple streets in the North Lancashire village including Main Street, Chapel View, Chapel Lane, Middleton Road and Pedder Road said their supply had either gone off altogether or been reduced to a trickle.

United Utilities said the problem was caused by a technical fault on a valve on the network which was repaired on Thursday, and residents should start to see their supply return.

The water company has also encouraged householders to be aware of frozen pipes during the current sub-zero temperatures. Their advice is:

· Prepare - know where your stop tap is and check it works, it’s usually under the kitchen sink but can also be in garages or cellars. Have a number of a plumber at hand or check if a water pipe leak or burst is covered on your home or business insurance.

· Insulate - insulate pipes in cold places like outside and in the garage and loft. Insulating hot water pipes will also prevent heat from escaping and help save money on your energy bills.

· Protect - any other exposed equipment, such as outside taps with an insulated cover.

· Easy - do it because it's easy and could save you hundreds of pounds in damage from flooding.

If you find you have no water during freezing weather conditions you should follows these steps to check if you have a frozen pipe:

Turn off your stop tap, usually found under your kitchen sink.

Turn on your cold tap in the kitchen. Use a warm towel or hot water bottle to gently warm the pipe each side of the stop tap. Depending on how frozen your pipes are, this could take 10 or 15 minutes.

Turn your stop tap back on to see if the water is running from the kitchen tap and check carefully for any leaks from the pipework, as the pipe might have burst.

In the case of a burst pipe you’ll need to turn off the stop tap again and call a plumber. If you still have no water, visit the United Utilities website to see if they are dealing with any issues in your area or give United Utilities a call on 03456 723 723.
