INTERVIEW: Nine-year-old Morecambe boy's new 'Puffin Rush' card game set for release

A nine-year-old boy from Morecambe looks set to take the world of family card games by storm.

Mason Cooper-Muir has created 'Puffin Rush' - an Arctic animal adventure game for all the family to enjoy - and is looking forward to it going on sale.

The Torrisholme Primary School pupil's dads Ben and Lee Cooper-Muir run Foul Play Games, based out of their office on Marine Road Central in Morecambe.

The Cooper-Muirs had huge success with the release of two murder mystery card games, so are now aiming to bring out Puffin Rush too, with the help of a crowdfunding campaign.

Puffin Rush is a card game for two to four players, and ages five and up.

It's described as "a family friendly, fast-paced race to catch a fishy friend and make it home before your puffin pal gets caught in the blizzard".

Each player plays with their own puffin card, which they have to move across a grid by turning over other cards to reveal different animals and challenges.

But beware! While some of the cards can help your puffin find a fish and get home to win the game, others can hinder you and 'send you back to your raft'.

The Cooper-Muirs have set up a Kickstarter campaign to fund Mason's game so it can be made and sold.

So far they have raised more than £1,000 towards their £1,500 goal.

Wow! It's day 7 of the kickstarter campaign and here's the update from Dad and Mason! Thank you all for being wonderful and backing Masons game as you can see he is one very happy boy! Still 23 days to go!!! Back us here: http://kck.st/3IOadLq

Lee said: "When myself and Ben were downstairs working on the Foul Play game, Mason said 'I think I can do a game like this, or even better!'

"We played it, and it was amazing! So yeah, we said 'do you think you'd want to try and get this game made?' and Mason said 'yes definitely!'"

Ben said: "Once we get the funding we can send it into production. It will be on sale here (in Morecambe) and then we'll send it to some of the suppliers we work with and see if they like it."

Illustrator Jacqui Davis is currently drawing the characters in Puffin Rush, which include a seal, owl, polar bear, a Baluga whale and Arctic fox, ready for the game to be manufactured.

Ben and Lee are also the founding fathers of one of the UK's premier murder mystery events companies, After Dark.

When their murder mystery shows shut down during the pandemic and lockdowns, they had to come up with another outlet for their creative energies, and Foul Play Games was born.

They have brought out two murder mystery card games - Foul Play: Once Upon a Crime and Foul Play: The Manor House Murder.

The games have been described as a cross between Cluedo and Guess Who?

The first game sold over 1000 units in its first month of release and garnered rave reviews from family bloggers, tabletop bloggers, crime writers and authors alike.
