Heysham Viking Festival set for comeback after 'last-minute decision'

A popular viking-themed festival in Heysham will go ahead in 2023 after all.

Organisers announced they had made a "last minute decision" to bring back the Heysham Viking Festival this summer.

The Heysham village event was last held in 2019 and it had previously been announced that it was "indefinitely postponed" and would not happen in 2023.

But earlier this week, it was revealed that vikings would once again 'invade' Heysham on July 15 and 16.

"It has been a last minute decision to hold it this year rather than next but we have put an organising committee together and the dates are booked," said a statement on the Heysham Viking Festival Facebook page.

"Please just give us a few weeks to sort ourselves out and then we will be accepting applications for trade stalls etc etc.

"Terry will be sorting the Viking side as usual and we will be asking for volunteers to help over the weekend.

"We really do look forward to seeing as many friends back in Heysham as we can possibly muster."

Organisers had previously announced that the festival would not happen in 2023 for financial reasons and because there weren't enough volunteers to run the event.

The festival, held on Heysham Village field, is traditionally attended by thousands of people who watch viking re-enactors take part in battles and other themed activities.
