Fundraiser for funeral of young woman found in River Lune raises more than £6,700

More than £6,700 has been raised for the funeral of a young woman whose body was found in the River Lune after she went missing.

Shannon Canning was described as "an amazing daughter, great sister, a good friend, a hardworking and dedicated colleague, and a sensitive soul who has left us all too soon".

Appeals went out to find Shannon, 24, who left her home in Keswick Court, Lancaster at 1.30pm on Friday May 19 and then did not turn up for work to open up Tipple bar in Lancaster city centre that afternoon.

Her body was discovered in the Lune at Halton on the afternoon of Tuesday May 24.

Police said there was no evidence of suspicious circumstances.

Friend Sarah Burns set up a fundraising page to help Shannon's family

"As a close family friend, to try and take some financial pressure off I’ve set up this Go Fund Me in the hope that people who knew Shannon or have been following this utterly horrific event unfold in the news can find it in their hearts to help towards the cost of her funeral and laying her to rest in the dignified way she deserves," she said.

"I know for so many of us, even people who didn’t know Shannon, we were rooting for a happier ending to this. So I’m asking for help in making this easier for her heartbroken loved ones, because in hard times we rally, as family, as friends and as a community.

"A local girl, Shannon was only 24 when she tragically lost her life. She was an amazing daughter, great sister, a good friend, a hardworking and dedicated colleague, and a sensitive soul who has left us all too soon. This is obviously completely unexpected and in the current climate funds for a funeral are out of most people's budgets.

"On behalf of her family I’d like to thank anyone who can help at all. Any arrangements will be made known as the situation evolves. Thankyou again.

*All the proceeds will go directly to the family from this Go Fund Me and will be transferred to Shannon’s mum, Jo Tymon, for their personal use as they deem suitable."

Detective Inspector Adie Knowles, speaking on his regular Beyond the Beat update on Beyond Radio on Tuesday, said:

"Shannon was reported missing to us, that she left her home address at 1.30am (on May 19).

"We commenced an investigation to try to find her and unfortunately on May 24 at around 4.20pm, somebody has reported that they thought there was a body in the River Lune. We attended with other emergency services and partners to recover the body and unfortunately it was Shannon.

"My thoughts are with her family and friends.

"There is an investigation ongoing by ourselves on behalf of the Coroner. As it stands there is no evidence of any third party involvement or suspicious circumstances."
