A football tournament organised to bring Lancaster’s Muslim community together has raised almost £6,000 for charity.
The LMC (Lancaster Muslim Community) Cup tournament was held over the weekend at Lancaster University, to celebrate the talent and dedication of teams from the local Muslim community and beyond.
The event also served as a platform for the Muslim community in Lancaster and beyond to come together and make a positive impact.
In the weeks leading up to the tournament, a fundraising campaign was launched to support orphans worldwide. The overwhelming response resulted in an impressive total of £5,950 being raised.
The money will be donated to the Seven Spikes Relief Foundation, who raise funds for orphans around the world. A single orphan sponsorship costs £360 annually to go towards food, education, clothes, and healthcare.
Imtiaz Khoda, the main organiser of the tournament, said: ‘’The funds raised will be dedicated to supporting 16 orphans for the coming 12 months, providing them with essential resources, education, and a brighter future.
‘’My heartfelt gratitude goes to all the teams, team captains, sponsors, volunteers, and spectators who contributed to this noble cause.
‘’Their unwavering support and dedication have made a significant difference in the lives of orphans worldwide.
‘’The success of this football tournament not only highlights the exceptional sporting talent within the Muslim community but also emphasizes their commitment to making a positive impact on a global scale. The event serves as an inspiration for future initiatives that aim to bring communities together through sports while supporting those in need.’’
Sultan FC emerged as the deserving champions, but it was not an easy victory for them. Blades Street 'A' and Refugees United pushed them to their limits, displaying exceptional talent and determination.
Speaking after lifting the trophy, Sufyaan Munshi captain of Sultan FC added: ‘’We are absolutely thrilled to have won the inaugural LMC tournament.
‘’A big thank you to all the participants, without them we wouldn’t have had this outstanding opportunity. It was played in the right spirit and true sportsmanship was shown by all the teams.’’
