Family appeals for help to create 'George's Forget-Me-Not Garden' in memory of toddler who died in gas explosion

A family has appealed for help in forming a team to create a 'Forget-Me-Not' garden in memory of a toddler who died in a gas explosion in Heysham.

Two-year-old George Hinds lost his life in the tragedy on Mallowdale Avenue on May 16 2021.

His nanna, Janice Studholme, posted on a new Facebook group 'George's Forget-Me-Not Garden' asking for help from landscape gardeners, project managers, tradesmen, refreshment staff, volunteers or anyone willing to give a couple of hours to help create the memorial community garden.

A community meeting will be held at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium, home of Morecambe FC, on Thursday April 18 at 7pm for anyone who would like to help.

"As a family we are now in a position to go forward with the plannings, to make a tragedy into a place where the community can come together," said Janice.

"First of all may I thank all the people who have supported my daughter, partner and family through this challenging time.

"From day one the community came together fundraising. Hurley Flyer, George's Convoy, GoFundMe page, the Grand Theatre, Travis Perkins, donations from the public all throughout England, the list is endless.

"From the bottom of my heart you will all be special.

"There was a fund of £20,750 which was raised altogether.

"The convoy money was divided between George's Forget-Me-Not Garden and the Tigerlily Trust.

"£2,350 was sent to the Tigerlily Trust to help the families providing support which is invaluable as my daughter and partner know.

"As we are now in position to start creating George’s garden, we are looking to make our own DIY team for anyone willing to join us in creating a special place for the family and community.

"Over the next couple of months we will be having meetings with our committee team to discuss the plans followed by a meeting with the community for anyone willing to help.

"We are looking for landscape gardeners, project managers, tradesmen, refreshment staff, volunteers or anyone willing to give a couple of hours to help.

"More details about the meeting will be coming out soon so please keep a look out."
