EXCLUSIVE: Morecambe town centre is "number one priority" for police after four violent incidents in two weeks

A detective sergeant says policing Morecambe town centre is the "number one priority" after four serious incidents - including a stabbing - in the Queen Street area over a two-week period.

Det Sgt Adie Knowles vowed that local police would "get a grip on what's going on in that area" and said several arrests had already been made.

This comes after a man was stabbed in a pub on March 17, two further serious assaults in the Queen Street area on March 23 including one where a man was kicked and lost the sight in his eye, and a further incident on March 30 where a man was found with serious head injuries and was in a coma.

Det Sgt Knowles said trouble was centred around the end of Queen Street furthest from the promenade.

He was speaking to Beyond Radio on his regular Beyond the Beat round-up on Tuesday night.

"The main issue for us in the last month or so is Morecambe town centre, specifically Queen Street," he said.

"The number one priority for Morecambe police at the moment, is to try to get a grip of what's going on in that area.

"It doesn't paint a great picture for Morecambe town centre at the moment but we are doing our utmost to sort it."

The first incident was on March 17, when a man was stabbed in the chest in the Joiners Arms pub on Queen Street.

Det Sgt Knowles (pictured below) said arrests had been made in connection with this incident.

Then on March 23 on Queen Street, Det Sgt Knowles said "a man was bundled over and was kicked to the face a couple of times and has lost the sight in his eye".

Two arrests have been made.

In a further incident on March 23, two men were attacked on nearby Deansgate, and one was hit with a brick.

Then on March 30, a man, aged in his 30s, was found with serious head injuries on Queen Street.

"He was in coma for a quite a while and is only just coming out of it," said Det Sgt Knowles.

"We believe he was assaulted."

One arrest has been made and police are appealing for help to trace another man they believe can help with their enquiries. For more information see the Morecambe Area Police Facebook page

Det Sgt Knowles said the spate of incidents was not "a representation of what Morecambe is usually like".

"I think we've just had a run of serious incidents that have all come along at once.

"It's not because Morecambe is going down the tubes.

"A couple of those assaults are linked to the anti-social juvenile element that has been present at the end of Queen Street.

"There is an ongoing operation around anti-social behaviour, including around issues on Queen Street.

"Over the course that it's been running 17 people in total have been arrested for various offences across Morecambe and Lancaster. So I can reassure everyone that it is our number one priority to knock on the head, these kind of incidents in Lancaster and Morecambe."

Det Sgt Knowles also said there had been a meeting between local police and with various other agencies, including the council, specifically to tackle what's going on in the area.

If you have any information about any of the incidents, please call police on 101, email Det Sgt Knowles directly on 6966@lancashire.police.uk or call the freephone anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.

*The Joiners Arms pub is currently closed.

Det Sgt Knowles said the pub was "closed by the brewery pending a change in management".

"I'm not aware that it was directly closed because of that incident (on March 17). It was closed by the brewery and wasn't something that was enforced by us," he said.

Beyond Radio has contacted Thwaites Brewery for comment but had not received a response as we went to press.
