The Lancaster MP says the government should give back any donations linked to Russia in the wake of the current situation with Ukraine.
Cat Smith said any such cash should be handed back, as it was ‘the only way to show that their days of turning a blind eye to kleptocratic loot are over. ‘
The Prime Minister was answering questions following a statement he gave to the House of Commons on the ongoing situation in Ukraine, in which he outlined the imposition of sanctions on Russian banks and individuals, in the hope of deterring Vladimir Putin from further aggression against Ukraine.
Cat Smith used the opportunity to ask Boris Johnson what he was doing to stop what she described as ‘dirty money’ being given to political parties.
She said: ‘’The Security Committee’s report (on democracy) sets out the challenge clearly. So can I ask the Prime Minister what does he propose to bring forward to ensure the Putin’s dirty money isn’t filling the pockets of UK political parties?’’
In a brief response, Mr Johnson said: ‘’As she knows, you can’t give money to UK political parties if you’re a foreign national.’’
