Cast revealed for 2022 Lancaster 'Play in the Park'

The cast members have been revealed for The Jungle Book - this year's promenade outdoor play in Williamson Park by The Dukes theatre.

The cast will be Pushpinder Chani (Midnight’s Children) as Bagheera, Lisa Howard as Shere Khan, Helen Longworth (The Archers) as Baloo, Purvi Parma as Akela and Jason Patel as Mowgli.

The Jungle Book has been adapted by Andrew Pollard and directed by Sarah Punshon, who both worked on last year’s acclaimed production of Grimm Tales in Williamson Park.

Performances will take place from Friday July 22 to Sunday August 28 in the Lancaster park.

The Dukes has described this year's production of the classic tale as being "full of catchy songs, wondrous characters and clever costumes" and a "laugh out loud adventure that will have you jumping for joy this summer".

The annual outdoor play is a fixture of the local events calendar and extremely popular with audiences.

Scenes take place in different locations in the picturesque park as the audience moves around with the cast to follow the action.

The first Dukes Play in the Park took place in 1987 so this year marks its 35th anniversary.

Since then the shows have attracted a total of more than half a million people.

The promenade production will be performed on Tuesdays to Sundays at 7.15pm each night.

Tickets are available at dukeslancaster.org or call 01524 598500 during box office opening hours.

Karen O’Neill, director of The Dukes, said: “Our annual Play in the Park this year will be ‘The Jungle Book’, and we are all thrilled.

"Once again the Dukes will be making our way to Williamson Park from July to the end of August, with an amazing creative and technical team and electrifying cast all working together to make this incredible show happen.

"We are so pleased to be back in the park working with the team there and Lancaster City Council on this annual family highlight! We cannot wait to welcome audiences old and young alike to join us on this new retelling of a classic tale.”

This year’s promenade production is sponsored by Lancaster BID and Supported by Lancaster University, Lancaster City Council and Arts Council England.
