Carnforth professor awarded CBE in New Year's Honours List

Professor Richard Bardgett CBE

A professor from Carnforth has been honoured for his work in climate change science in the King's first New Year's Honours List.

Professor Richard Bardgett has become a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for services to soil ecology and climate change science.

Prof Bardgett is a professor of ecology at the University of Manchester.

Over the last 30 years, his research has led to mechanistic and conceptual advances in the area of plant-soil interactions, with a particular focus on understanding impacts of plants on soil microbial communities and feedback consequences for plant growth and ecosystem processes, especially carbon and nitrogen cycling.

A number of people from Cumbria have also been honoured in the list.

They include Sheila Ashburner, from Milnthorpe, who has been awarded a British Empire Medal for services to her local community.

Professor Joanne Rycroft-Malone, of Grange-over-Sands, former programme director for the National Institute for Health Research, has been awarded an OBE for services to research.

Steve Watts, from Grasmere, has been awarded an MBE for services to fundraising after he turned pictures from his daily lockdown runs into a book to raise money for charity.

Nick Owen, a team leader for Langdale and Ambleside Mountain rescue, has been awarded an MBE for his voluntary work.

Elsewhere in the honours list, Queen guitarist Brian May and artist Grayson Perry have been knighted, Olympic heptathlete Denise Lewis has been made a Dame, and members of England's European Championship-winning women's football team have also been recognised.

Countdown presenter Rachel Riley is made an MBE for her efforts to raise awareness of the Holocaust and combat antisemitism.

Former footballer and TV presenter Chris Kamara, who recently spoke out about his difficulties with the speech disorder apraxia, has been made an MBE for services to football, anti-racism and charity.
