CancerCare 40th Anniversary Ball raises more than £23,000

Supporters of a local charity have raised more than £23,000 at a ball held to mark four decades of support for people affected by cancer.

The CancerCare 40th anniversary ball, held at Morecambe Football Club, raised £23,400 including Gift Aid.

The event featured food, entertainment, and a special look back at the work the charity has done since it began in 1983.

CancerCare is an independent, local charity supporting people affected by cancer in North Lancashire and South Cumbria, with centres in Lancaster, Morecambe, Kendal and Barrow.

“It was fantastic to see so many of our supporters, staff, volunteers, clients and local business partners come together to celebrate this milestone occasion for CancerCare," said Claire Mason, CancerCare’s head of fundraising and marketing.

"Everyone had such a fun evening, and there were many ways to get involved and raise some money, including a fabulous raffle, silent and live auctions and an opportunity to win a Golden Ticket prize.”

In 2023 alone, the charity supported over 2,000 clients, ranging from the ages of three to 101, offering a range of support to people affected by cancer. All the money raised from the evening will go towards keeping the charity running.

The ball’s main sponsor was the Port of Lancaster at Glasson Dock, and food and drink sponsor was FGH Security.

Alison Stainthorpe, CancerCare’s CEO (pictured below), said: “Through fundraising at events such as these, we’re able to ensure that no-one in our local community will have to face cancer alone. We hope to be able to keep that promise for another 40 years.”

*CancerCare will hold its Lights on the Lawn event from 6.45pm on April 19, which will see the gardens at its Slynedales Centre adorned with hundreds of candles dedicated to lost family and friends.

Supporters of all ages are invited to decorate and personalise a glass memory jar, in return for a donation, with a personal message.

The jars will then be added to the shining displays of lights around the lawn, trees, and flowerbeds of the charity’s garden.

A musician will play calming background music for the event, which will also offer time and space for quiet reflection. A CancerCare therapist will be on hand if any attendees feel the need to talk to someone.

This is the third year that the charity has run a Lights in memory event: last year around 100 people gathered to remember lost family and friends.

In addition to honouring the memory of a loved one, those involved will also be supporting CancerCare’s work and providing vital help to people in our local community affected by cancer or bereavement.

For those who cannot attend the event, a dedication can be made online here for a donation; CancerCare staff will place their jar on the lawn, and donors will receive a special keepsake postcard.
