Calls for action on eyesore building in Morecambe with 'trees growing out of it'

There have been calls to clean up an eyesore building at the gateway to Morecambe which has trees growing from it.

The state of the closed-down former shop on the route into Morecambe town centre has raised eyebrows with residents and also came up at a recent meeting of local councillors.

Lancaster City Council said the owners of the building on the corner of Euston Road and Euston Grove are expected to put a planning application in soon for "alterations" to the run down premises.

"The property has been empty since 2017 having been prohibited by our housing standards team due to it being in poor condition internally," said a spokesperson for Lancaster City Council.

"To encourage the owners of the property to take action, it was referred to our empty homes officer a number of years later who met with them to discuss what needed to be done to make the building safe.

"We are expecting to receive a planning application for alterations to the building soon and will be contacting the owners for a progress report on this."

Recently the subject of the building came up at a meeting of Morecambe Town Council, when the issue was raised by Councillor Catherine Pilling, a Liberal Democrat.

"Buildings are being left to deteriorate in Morecambe," she said at the meeting held on March 9 at Morecambe Town Hall.

"The one on the corner of Euston Road is at the gateway to Morecambe. There are trees growing out of it.

"It has been reported to Lancaster City Council. The landlord is Manchester-based.

"There is a need to keep these buildings in a reasonable state. There are others across the town that are just left, and the residents and taxpayers have to sit and watch them deteriorate."

Councillor Pilling was speaking during talks between town councillors about a 'Morecambe Neighbourhood Plan'.

The Neighbourhood Plan will be used as a blueprint for any future planning decisions on building and development in Morecambe.
