Burger King withdraws plans for drive-through in Morecambe

Plans to open a new Burger King drive-through in Morecambe have been withdrawn.

The planning application for a new burger restaurant in the former Frankie & Benny's in the town was due to be discussed at a meeting at Morecambe Town Hall on Monday.

Council officers had recommended the application be refused but the final decision was due to be made by Lancaster City Council planning regulatory committee, a group of elected councillors.

But it was announced at the meeting that the proposal had been withdrawn.

A council spokesperson said they had no further information to provide as to why the planning application was withdrawn, and it was "a matter for the applicant".

A spokesperson for Burger King said: “Burger King UK is regularly evaluating opportunities to bring our great-tasting products to more guests in new locations, however we do not currently have any further information at this time.”

The premises was originally built in the mid-1990s as a drive-through Burger King takeaway until Italian-American restaurant chain Frankie & Benny's took over the site in 2008, removing the drive-through.

They vacated the site in 2020 and the building (below) has been closed ever since.

Representatives of Burger King had asked for a 'change of use' on the building to restore the drive-through, demolish extensions to the premises and install new windows.

But a Lancaster City Council planning report said the plans failed "to provide adequate capacity for vehicles queuing to use the proposed drive through".

Lancashire County Council Highways had objected to the plans, as had Environmental Health saying there had been "no information submitted on noise and odour (or) potential impacts on nearby residential receptors".

The land is owned by Lancaster City Council.

Burger King already has a restaurant in Morecambe town centre, next to the Arndale.

In October 2022, the chain also opened a new restaurant in Lancaster city centre (see photo below).
