Bereavement support centre that ‘makes a real difference to young people's lives’ celebrates second anniversary

A bereavement support centre in Lancaster is marking two years of helping children who have lost a loved one.

The Forget Me Not Centre was opened at St John’s Hospice on Slyne Road, in June 2022.

The centre provides a range of therapeutic support for children and families, offering ‘wrap around’ care including a safe space for children, adults and families to connect and to meet others dealing with the death of someone that meant the world to them.

In 2023 the Forget Not Centre helped local people to express and deal with their grief, through a range of activities and therapy resources, including 253 bereavement support sessions for adults, 135 children and young people therapy sessions, outreach work with schools, teenagers and the monthly St John’s Grief Café.

Among the families helped by the centre is Melanie and her daughters Leah and Daisy, who have been supported by the Forget Me Not Centre team, during and following the death of their loving husband and father, Darren who sadly died on Father’s Day in 2023.

Melanie said: ‘’We couldn’t thank the Hospice enough for our amazing three weeks with Darren before his passing and the amazing work the Forget Me Not Centre offers to us even after death.

‘’We would be truly lost without this amazing place and we will continue to go when we need to. It’s made the loss more bearable.”

You can donate to help the centre continue to be the safe space for people to deal with their grief.
