Barclays Bank to move to Carnforth hotel after high street branch closes

A reduced Barclays Bank service will open in a new location in Carnforth following the closure of the town's high street branch next month.

Barclays will have a presence in the Royal Station Hotel on Market Street on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from Tuesday October 18, it has been confirmed.

This comes after huge public opposition to plans to close the long-standing branch on Market Street.

Carnforth Town Council urged Barclays bosses to reconsider the decision, which had been made due to a 34 per cent drop in counter transactions over the past two years.

An online petition urging Barclays to reconsider was signed by more than 1,000 people.

"They listened to the concerns raised by residents and expressed a clear desire to maintain some presence in the town so that customers can talk to staff in person on day-to-day banking queries and assistance with managing money," said a Carnforth Town Council spokesperson.

"Barclays have worked hard to find alternative premises in a central location of town with good access and we are pleased to announce that Barclays will be relocated at the Royal Station Hotel on Market Street and be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9.30am to 4pm."

The new arrangements will be launched by the Councillor Chris Smith, town mayor, on October 18 at a time to be confirmed.

"It is pleasing to see Barclays Bank maintaining its support for customers in Carnforth and surrounding areas, especially given that this will be provided using space made available by one of our businesses," said Councillor Smith.

"Our thanks to the owner and staff of the Royal Station Hotel for making this service possible."

Lindsay McAlice-Kennedy, Barclays Customer Care Director, said: “We’re delighted we’ll be able to operate from the Royal Station Hotel in Carnforth from October 18 onwards and they have made us feel very welcome.

"Customers will still have access to general advice and help with basic banking, such as transfers between accounts, change of address, opening of savings and ISA accounts, setting up mobile banking and amending direct debits and standing orders.

“We look forward to welcoming customers and local residents to our new location – please do call in and say hello as you’re sure to see some familiar faces.”
