£195,000 upgrade works begin on road next to Morecambe Promenade

A section of Marine Road Central will be closed for a week for upgrade works

A section of road next to Morecambe Prom is set to close for £195,000 resurfacing works.

Work will be carried out on Marine Road Central in Morecambe from the Central Drive Roundabout to the end of the dual carriageway over the coming days.

The work, which includes roadway near the Midland Hotel on Marine Road Central, the proposed Eden Project site and the Winter Gardens, is part of the annual Lancashire County Council Highways programme.

A council spokesperson said the first section of work on Marine Road will be carried out on Wednesday under 'stop and go' traffic control, then on Thursday the northbound carriageway will close with work affecting the Midland although access will be maintained, with further closures to the southbound carriageway on Friday July 21 and Monday July 24.

County Councillor for Morecambe South, Charlie Edwards, said the work was being carried out with "perfect timing" before the summer holidays.

“People across Morecambe tell me that improving our roads is one of their top priorities," said County Councillor Edwards.

"The work is due to finish just as we start the summer holidays and welcome thousands of guests every day to our great town.

"This is perfect timing and in a perfect location, outside the Midland, Eden Project site and Winter Gardens.

"We will continue to work tirelessly to deliver better roads across Morecambe, and we are investing more than ever to improve them."

Here is how the road looks before the resurfacing work is carried out.

John O'Neill, manager of Morecambe BID, an independent body representing town centre businesses, said: "We welcome all infrastructure improvements in the district.

"It's important that Morecambe continues to improve, in light of the forthcoming Eden Project in Morecambe and other investments planned.

"Of course we expect that further public realm improvements, especially the footpaths, will be forthcoming as we really need Morecambe to shine for our expected large increase in visitors."

Here is a map of the affected area showing the closure stretching from the Central Drive roundabout up towards the Winter Gardens.

The work is due to cost £195,796 and was agreed by the County Council's Cabinet in March 2023.

This is part of the annual Highways programme which was bolstered in March by a further £5m from the government.
