Men arrested and charged with wildlife crime in Kendal

Two men have been convicted of wildlife crime after being arrested during a vehicle stop in Kendal.

Last month, police officers in Kendal conducted a stop check of a vehicle after it had initially tried to speed away from them.

During a search of the vehicle cannabis, cocaine and numerous items associated with poaching and hunting including a shovel, gas cylinder, underground dog collar and tracking device were found.

In the boot of the vehicle officers located a storage box containing a terrier dog and an injured Fox. The Fox was taken to a local vet surgery but had to be euthanised.

As a result of the check Benjamin Wilson (34) and Benjamin Grannan (25) from the West Yorkshire area were arrested for possession of controlled drugs and a Hunting Act offence. Both were subsequently charged and last week appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates Court.

Wilson and Grattan were each fined £100 for the hunting offence.

Wilson was fined an additional £200 and issued three penalty points on his driving licence for using a vehicle in a dangerous condition. Wilson must also pay £300 Court costs and £120 Victim surcharge.

Grannan was subject to a three month suspended prison sentence which is valid for 12 months. He was ordered to undertake 80 hours of unpaid work. He was fined £50 for possession of cannabis, ordered to pay £330 court costs and £154 victim surcharge.

The vehicle used by them was subject to a forfeiture and destruction order.
