Lib Dems maintain majority after Grange and Cartmel by-election

Andy Hull is the newly elected Westmorland and Furness Council Member for the Grange and Cartmel Ward, after winning the by-election.

A Liberal Democrat, Mr Hull won the seat vacated by Cllr Pete Endsor, in March 2024.

The result means that the ruling Liberal Democrat Party, led by Cllr Jonathan Brook, maintains their seven seat majority on the Council with 36 out of a total of 65 seats. The Labour Party with 15 seats, the Conservative Party with 11 seats and Independents with three seats make up the rest of the council’s numbers.

A total of 3,694 valid votes were cast in the by-election, representing a 43.01% turnout. Of the votes cast, Andy Hull received 2,852 votes, the Conservative Party candidate, Ally Hibbert, received 691 votes and the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition Candidate, Martin Powell-Davies, received 151 votes. A total of 21 votes were rejected.

Speaking after the declaration, Cllr Hull said, “I am absolutely delighted to have been elected as Councillor for the community I call home, I’m so grateful to everyone who put their faith in me. I can’t wait to get to work and get things done for local residents.”

Elections were also held for Ulverston Town Council, the Penrith West Ward of Penrith Town Council and Staveley-in-Cartmel Parish Council.
