Kendal mental health charity partners with community coffee house for new support space for young people

A new space in Kendal where young people can socialise and support each other opens its doors this weekend.

Wave Forward, a mental health and wellbeing charity set up specifically for young people, has announced an open day for The Helm on Saturday.

This new space aims to provide a hub where young people can make friends, engage in activities, relax, and support each other.

The Helm is designed with young people at its core, to foster inclusivity and prioritise positive mental health both in schools and across the local community and you’re invited to come and check it out!

It’s this Saturday, May 25th at the No-Hands Rest coffee house.

On from 10am until 2pm, there will be snacks, games and comfy sofas for anyone aged 13 to 25 who wants to see what the project is about.

Benjamin Guilfoyle, Youth Worker at Wave Forward, said: ‘’The Helm has been built following the success of Wave Forward’s Wellbeing Ambassador Programme, a school initiative dedicated to promoting positive mental health, with The No-Hands Rest coffee house, known for its values of inclusivity, collaboration, and compassion, serving as the perfect location for The Helm Headquarters.

‘’The Helm is a hub run by young people, for young people with the guidance of Wave Forward’s experienced staff. Wellbeing Ambassadors from local schools will contribute, promoting mental health and wellbeing initiatives within the community.

‘’1 in 5 teenagers face mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. This concerning statistic is one of the driving forces behind The Helm but through ongoing training and support, the young people of The Helm will be empowered to take charge and steer the direction of this brand new initiative.

‘’Participation in The Helm will equip young people with valuable skills in mental health advocacy and support, benefiting their future careers, personal development and overall purpose in life.’’
