The Shrimps started the game well and in just the fifth minute Stockton picked up the ball on the edge of the box and saw his effort go narrowly wide.

On the half hour mark Jay Stansfield found Jake Caprice on the right whose low drive was saved well turned around the post by Connor Ripley.

It was the Shrimps who took the lead shorty after through an excellent corner routine.

Jensen Weir played the ball to Caleb Watts, who chipped the ball into the path of Stockton who headed home into the far corner of Jamal Blackman’s net.

The lead lasted less than two minutes as the Grecians found themselves level.

Stansfield was allowed to run in the Morecambe box, his pull back found Sam Nombe, who’s effoet was saved by Ripley, before being smashed home by Josh Key on the rebound from close range.

After the break, Jake Taylor was closed down when well placed in the box, before Caleb Watts headed an Adam Mayor cross over the bar.

After that, Morecambe found themselves with plenty of defending to do, as the visitors pressed hard in the closing stages, and they had a golden opportunity to go in front on 71 minutes when Nombe raced in on goal and one-on-one with Ripley, only to see his effort hit the post.

The Grecians almost won it right at the death when substitute Jevani Brown forced Ripley to save low to his left.
