Morecambe extended their unbeaten home record after a 1-0 victory over Salford City.

Salford co-owners and former Premier League stars Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt watched on as Michael Mellon’s fourth goal of the season proved to be enough for all three points in League Two at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

Tom Bloxham had an early chance for the Shrimps, but he skied his half volley over the bar on 14 minutes.

Three minutes later, the Ammies had what would turn out to be their only real effort on target all game. Conor McAleny’s powerful strike was well kept out by Stuart Moore low down to his right.

Just past the midway stage of the half, the Shrimps were ahead – Adam Mayor did excellently to work the ball to the touchline before crossing into the path of Mellon, he found the roof of the net with his first touch at the near post.

Bloxham then fired at goal after finding space, but the ball whistled past Alex Cairns’ right-hand post, before Mellon had another effort go wide just before half time.

The visitors enjoyed some good spells of pressure in the second half without really troubling the Morecambe goal or back line.

A brilliant Jacob Bedeau block denied the visitors a shot on goal on 72 minutes as Curtis Tilt’s rocket looked to be on target, while keeper Moore punched a dangerous free kick clear with five to play.

With two minutes of normal time left to play, substitute Jordan Slew was presented with a golden chance to wrap up proceedings, but his shot was straight at Cairns from close range after an excellent Adam Mayor pull back.

Then, deep in added time, Salford substitute Matthew Lund was sent off, after lashing out at Jacob Davenport as the pair challenged for the ball.

Morecambe move onto 10 points from their opening six League Two fixtures, ahead of a blank weekend next Saturday due to the international break, after the Shrimps’ game against Barrow was postponed due to international call ups.
