Morecambe FC responds to claims over football club takeover

Morecambe FC has responded to claims that the football club is on the verge of being sold.

In a statement released on Wednesday, a club spokesperson said:

"The club is aware of an article released today by the Daily Mail regarding a potential sale.

"At this point, we are not in a position to comment as it would be inappropriate to do so.

"Should any sale be completed, we will share this with supporters at the right time."

The Mail reported on Wednesday that businessman Sarbjot Johal, 20, was in advanced talks to buy the club.

Mr Johal, chairman of private equity firm Sarb Capital and founder of Vitanic Holdings Ltd - a non-alcoholic drinks company based in Birmingham - attended Morecambe's 5-0 win over Burton Albion on New Year's Day.

He also posted a copy of The Mail article to his Instagram Story.

In September 2022, it was announced that Jason Whittingham of Bond Group Investments and Colin Goldring were stepping back from their positions on the board of directors, and the club was being prepared for sale.

Bond Group Investments have owned Morecambe FC since May 2018.

Then in October, world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, who owns a gym at Morecambe's Mazuma Stadium complex, declared an interest in buying the League One club.

Morecambe currently lie 22nd in League One in the relegation zone, having moved off the bottom following back-to-back wins over the Christmas and New Year period.
