Morecambe FC striker Cole Stockton has been offered a new contract to be the highest paid player at the club, said Shrimps manager Derek Adams.

The striker and last season's top goalscorer missed the games against Fleetwood Town and Bolton Wanderers after calling in sick, which led to speculation about his future at the club.

Stockton was back in the squad for Saturday's visit to Oxford United and came off the bench to play in the 1-1 draw.

And afterwards, Morecambe manager Derek Adams revealed the club had received offers for the number nine.

"He's been ill for the past week, he trained yesterday," he said on Saturday.

"At this moment in time we have had no bid that has been accepted. We've had a couple of bids that have been derisory to say the least and we won't be allowing him to leave for that.

"The owners have a value for him, he knows that, we've spoken to him. When you sign a contract you have to stay until the owners say otherwise. We would like him to stay, we've offered him a new contract, we've offered him to be the highest paid player at the club and so be it."
