Vikings marched through Heysham as crowds defied the wind and rain to enjoy the return of a popular village festival.

The Heysham Viking Festival saw re-enactors in full costume parade through the village and up to the cliffs by St Peter's Church on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the weekend's torrential rain and high winds, the festival still attracted the crowds onto Heysham village field.

However some re-enactors did have to leave on Saturday evening due to the bad weather and Sunday's itinerary had to be cut short.

Other highlights included a viking battle where re-enactors demonstrated the use of traditional weapons.

Children also got involved, chasing the vikings around the field with shields and swords to great applause from onlookers!

There was also an encampment showing how the vikings lived their daily lives.

Earlier this year, organisers announced they had made a ‘last minute decision’ to bring back the Heysham Viking Festival this summer. The free event was last held in 2019.
