Lancaster getting ready for return of International Youth Games

Lancaster will be taking a team to the 2022 International Youth Games in the Netherlands.

Lancaster will be sending a team to the International Youth Games when the event returns for the first time in three years.

The Games will take place in Almere, Netherlands, from July 18-21 2022.

There had been uncertainty over whether the Games would take place as scheduled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused the 2020 and 2021 events to be cancelled.

But the Lancaster International Youth Games committee has confirmed it will be sending a team to Almere.

The Games sees young people from across Europe compete in a variety of different sports and also take part in dance and music workshops.

There are four host cities: Aalborg, Almere, Rendsburg and Lancaster, all of whom are twinned with each other.

Lancaster is due to host the Games in 2023.

The committee is made up of local sports leaders who came together to keep Lancaster involved in the Games after Lancaster City Council withdrew funding in 2016.

"There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to make this happen," said a Lancaster committee spokesperson, in a statement on their Facebook page.

"The challenges (Almere has) faced to make the Games happen this year have been immense, and they have given as much effort into making this years Games happen as possible! But the benefits of the Games are worth every effort.

"Lancaster will be taking a small team to participate in the Games this summer, for the first time since 2019.

"Everyone is very excited already!"
