Celebrations underway to celebrate Morecambe’s Arndale Centre turning 50

Celebrations are underway to mark Morecambe’s Arndale Centre’s 50th anniversary.

Morecambe's Ukulele Club kicked off the anniversary celebrations, performing in the centre over the weekend.

The Ladies of Note will be back to sing in the morning on the 12th November followed by Lancaster and Morecambe Men’s Choir between 12-2pm.

On the 17th November the Morecambe Bay Community Primary School choir will sing songs from their Young Voices performance.

And then on Saturday,19th November between 11am and 3pm, it’s the centre’s big birthday party, with free fun for all the family, including the return of the popular Punch & Judy Show, a bouncy castle and bucking football.

Throughout the whole month the Arndale will be giving away lots of bumper #WinningWednesday prizes.

The Arndale Centre first opened its doors on Thursday May 25, 1972, as a joint venture between Town & City Properties Ltd and Morecambe & Heysham Borough Council. The former Royalty Theatre was demolished to make way for its construction.

It was officially opened by Dame Thora Hird.

Arndale Centres were the first ‘American style’ malls to be built in the United Kingdom. In total, twenty three of them have been built in the UK, and three in Australia.

Morecambe’s Arndale Centre is currently owned by NewRiver REIT, and earlier this year was put up for sale for five million pounds. Listings show the centre as ‘sale pending’.
