Young people in South Cumbria are stepping up to demand change in how mental health is understood, supported, and prioritised for their generation.
With rates of mental health issues among 16–25-year-olds continuing to rise - nearly one in six now face significant challenges.
On Sunday, 15th December, young people aged 16–25 from across the South Lakes are invited to gather at No-Hand’s Rest Coffee House in Kendal for a unique opportunity to design and launch a grassroots mental health awareness campaign.
Wave Forward, the charity organising this event, is setting itself apart by placing co-design and co-collaboration with young people at the heart of its work. Unlike traditional top-down initiatives, Wave Forward listens first, empowering young people to lead the conversation and craft solutions that resonate.
Through its youth network, The Helm, the organisation offers a platform for creative, peer-driven campaigns that tackle mental health stigma while building confidence and skills among participants.
A spokesperson said: ‘’At a time when many feel alienated by conventional support systems, The Helm provides a collaborative space where young people’s ideas, opinions, and lived experiences take centre stage.
‘’By involving youth in every step, from brainstorming concepts to delivering impactful campaigns, this approach ensures the solutions are by and for young people.
‘’National reports show young people need alternative provision as well as traditional mental health services.
‘’A staggering number are unaware of support options beyond clinical settings. Wave Forward’s approach fills this gap by fostering community-led action and creative expression through their peer projects, as well as providing much-needed intervention counselling and emotional support to pick up where so many current services are dropping off.’’
This December session offers a chance for young people to make their mark and help their peers.
Snacks, creative activities, and chill spaces will be available, ensuring an inclusive and relaxed environment for creativity and individuals to thrive. Whether you’re passionate about mental health, skilled in design, or simply eager to make a difference, your voice is needed.
