Following the success of its first three sessions, Wave Forward's youth hub The Helm is set to host a special Halloween-themed event for young people aged 13-25.
Now in its fourth session, The Helm continues to grow, offering a safe, creative, and inclusive space for young people in Kendal and the South Lakes.
The next session will take place on Saturday (October 12), from 4-6pm at No-Hands Rest Coffee House, and will feature a range of exciting activities, including pumpkin carving, potion making, tarot reading, and sweet treats.
Fancy dress is optional, but attendees are encouraged to get into the spooky spirit.
Since its launch, The Helm has gone from strength to strength, empowering young people to take the lead on creative projects, develop new friendships, and support each other’s wellbeing.
More than just a youth group, The Helm is a vibrant community where young people can express themselves, explore new activities, and learn valuable skills.
With mental health challenges for young people on the rise, programmes like The Helm are increasingly vital.
A recent study revealed that 1 in 5 teenagers in the UK currently experience mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
Wave Forward’s initiative, The Helm, addresses this growing concern by providing a proactive, supportive environment designed specifically for young people.
In addition to offering fun and engaging activities, The Helm focuses on fostering mental wellbeing. The hub is part of Wave Forward’s wider Wellbeing Ambassador Programme, which trains young people to support their peers and create a culture of mental health awareness in their schools and communities.
Participants gain leadership experience, build confidence, and contribute to projects that benefit not only themselves but the wider community.
Lisa Atkinson, Director of Wave Forward, said, "We are so proud of the progress The Helm has made in such a short time.
‘’The young people who come to The Helm are driving the energy and creativity behind each session, and it’s incredible to see how much they are getting out of it – from the activities to the friendships, and most importantly, the support they offer each other."
