Report, highlights & reaction: Harrogate Town 1-2 Morecambe

Morecambe snatched a dramatic 96th minute winner to claim their second League 2 victory of the season at Wetherby Road.

There’s highlights, reaction and more in the latest episode of The Shrimps Verdict podcast, out now.

The first big chance of proceedings came in the 17th minute as the home side created an attack on goal, but great work from Jamie Stott meant he was there to hook the ball away from the feet of Josh March.

Minutes later, the Shrimps were denied by the post after Adam Lewis whipped in a dangerous corner kick into the mix. A scramble in the box followed before a header crashed against the woodwork.

Harrogate had the next chance, as Stephen Duke-Mckenna’s curling effort went just wide from 25 yards.

The Shrimps opened the scoring in the 37th minute.

Ben Tollitt sent a magnificent corner towards the near post where Rhys Williams rose highest to nod home, making it two goals in two matches for the Liverpool loanee.

Harrogate came out with more energy in the second half.

In the 60th minute, they had the ball in the net after Stuart Moore made a block to deny Ellis Taylor’s powerful strike from close range with Jack Muldoon converting the rebound, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Callum Jones tested goalkeeper James Belshaw from distance, before visiting keeper Stuart Moore had to be withdrawn 15 minutes from time with a hip injury.

Harry Burgoyne was forced to make several crucial saves in the closing stages, in a  spell of pressure that also included James Daly somehow missing an open goal tap in from just a couple of yards out, as Morecambe found themselves with plenty of defending to do.

The pressure finally told four minutes from time, as Daly equalised with a low drive through a crowded penalty area following a scramble.

That was before the late drama.

With just 30 seconds of added time to go, David Tutonda nicked possession on the edge of Harrogate box and pulled the ball back from the byline.

The hosts didn’t clear their lines, and the ball fell to Gwion Edwards, who showed greart composure 12 yards out to pick out Harvey Macadam, and the substitute calmly slotted the ball into the corner, as wild celebrations erupted on the pitch and in the away end.
