Morecambe’s confidence boosting 4-2 victory over Nottingham Forest U21s saw the Shrimps qualify for the knockout phase of the EFL Trophy.

Forest had the first real chance of the game in the 10th minute, as James Sinclair found himself through on goal, only to be met by goalkeeper, Harry Burgoyne, who was off his line quickly and blocked his effort.

In the 22nd minute, Forest U21s took the lead after a breakaway saw Finley Back, square the ball, where Adam Lewis put through his own net.

The Shrimps found the equaliser in the 42nd minute, as Ben Tollitt ‘s effort from range was deflected past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

The visitors were able to re-establish their lead early in the second half, after a free kick from wide on the right was put into a crowded penalty area, with the last touch appearing to come off Morecambe midfielder Paul Lewis and dribbling into the net.

Hallam Hope saw  his header inches wide of the target, before the Shrimps levelled up the contest in the 69th minute, as Charlie Brown rose to meet an Adam Lewis cross from the left side.

Morecambe were in front with 12 minutes to play.

Tollitt played the ball into the feet of Hallam Hope, who with his back to goal on the edge of the area, turned and fired low into the corner.

The hosts made it four in the 87th minute, after an Adam Lewis shot was cleared only as far as Tollitt, who fired low through a crowded area into the bottom corner.

Morecambe need a point from their final EFL Trophy group fixture against Carlisle next month to top the group and guarantee a home tie in the next round of the competition.
