Morecambe claimed their first win of the season after a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
The Shrimps – who have lost all four of their League Two fixtures 1-0 and also bowed out of the Carabao Cup at the first round stage – secured victory in their opening EFL Trophy group game at The Brick Community Stadium.
Derek Adams made eight changes to the starting line up from the league fixture against Newport County on Saturday, and took the lead with a fine counter attacking move on 12 minutes.
Harvey Macadam brought the ball forward before releasing Ben Tollitt down the right, who advanced into the area before slipping the ball across the six yard box for Macadam to finish past Tom Watson from close range, in what was Morecambe’s first goal of the season.
Kayden Harrack came close to doubling the advantage but after great work to skip in the penaty area, blazed over the bar with only Watson to beat.
Wigan continued to press after half time before levelling from the penalty spot on 62 minutes.
Adam Lewis brought down James Carragher in the box and Joe Hugill made no mistake from 12 yards.
Morecambe were ahead again less than two minutes later. Toby Sibbick slipped inside the Wigan penalty area, gifting the ball to Lee Angol, who finished well past Watson form eight yards.
Wigan pushed for an equaliser but the Shrimps defended well as they had done all evening and restricted the Latics to only one effort on goal with a Scott Smith shot which was easily gathered by Burgoyne.
