Morecambe book FA Cup second round place after Worthing victory

Morecambe booked their place in the second round of the FA Cup after overcoming National League South side, Worthing.

Goals from Jordan Slew and Rhys Williams secured passage into round two for the Shrimps on the south coast.

It was a perfect start for Derek Adams' men, as in the eight minute an Adam Lewis long throw fell perfectly for Slew, who marked 100 appearances for the club with a blistering righted volley into the back of the net.

Adam Lewis struck the ball from just outside the box which sailed over the bar, before Stuart Moore was at full stretch to deny Worthing an equaliser through Wheeler's swirling effort from distance.

The Rebels had a great chance to level just before half time, as a well worked move on the edge of the area ended with Joe Cook’s powerful strike flying only inches over the bar.

Chris Agutter's side came out after the break on the offensive, and produced a flurry of chances inside the opening ten minutes.

In the 53rd minute, Luke Hendrie blocked a dangerous Worthing attack before, moments later, the defence was tested again after Jack Spong, Danny Cashman and Tommy Willard combined well but were unable to find the target.

Ben Tollitt’s drive towards the bottom corner was well saved by home keeper Chris Haigh, while at the other end Stuart Moore expertly tipped over an acrobatic effort from Joel Colbran from six yards out.

Six minutes from time, substitute Gwion Edwards pounced on a loose ball 30 yards out with the keeper out of position, but his lob was cleared off the line by Sam Beard.

Morecambe finally confirmed their place in round two a couple of minutes from time.

Hallam Hope won a free kick out on the right. The delivery from Callum Jones was perfect and from close range Rhys Williams headed home to score his first goal for the club.
