Missed chances prove costly again for Morecambe in Crewe defeat

Morecambe are five points from safety in League Two after a 1-0 defeat to high flying Crewe Alexandra at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

The Shrimps were made to pay for missing a string of good chances, as the Railwaymen snatched all three points with a goal midway through the second half.

Crewe’s Jack Lankester had a chance to put his side ahead in the eighth minute as he charged down the left flank before floating the ball towards goal from a tight angle. Harry Burgoyne tipped the shot over the bar.

Matus Holicek received the ball one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his tame effort was easily dealt with by Burgoyne.

Whilst the visitors had kept possession for large periods of the first half, Callum Jones came close to opening the scoring in the 28th minute. Gwion Edwards charged down the left flank before crossing the ball into the penalty area where Jones rose highest but was unable to direct his header on target.

Then, Edwards received the ball at the edge of the box and tried his luck from distance, forcing Filip Marschall to get down low and turn the ball around the post.

A golden opportunity went begging for the Shrimps soon after. Yann Songo’o caught the Alex defence napping, but Jones dragged his effort was inches wide of the near post.

Ben Tollitt was the next player in search of the opener; his curling effort drifted just wide of the top corner with the home side continuing to have the better of the chances in the first half.

In the second half, Songo’o came close to finding the target with his header just after the restart, before David Tutonda won the ball back in a dangerous area with some great footwork before releasing a powerful strike that flashed just over the crossbar.

But then midway through the half, the visitors took the lead.

Ryan Cooney, against his former club, made an undetected run into the right side of the penalty area, and his pulled back was slotted home from six yards out by substitute Chris Long.

Against the run of play, Crewe found the breakthrough as Long prodded the ball into the back of the net from close range following a cross from Ryan Cooney.

Morecambe pushed for an equaliser, but a Tollitt effort from range straight at the keeper and a late Harvey Macadam effort that was pushed away was the closest they came.
