Lancaster take home 94 medals from successful International Youth Games

Lancaster won 37 medals in swimming at the Youth Games

The Lancaster team has won 94 medals - 42 of them gold - during a successful International Youth Games.

The 39 members of the young Lancaster team performed superbly at the event in Rendsburg, Germany.

The Games has been taking place since the mid-70s as a way to strengthen links between Lancaster and its twin towns. The four countries involved take it in turns to host.

The host cities are Aalborg in Denmark, Almere in the Netherlands, Rendsburg and Lancaster, all of whom are twinned with each other.

Lancaster was represented in five sports - athletics, badminton, basketball (pictured below), rowing and swimming.

Lancaster won medals as follows:

Athletics: 12 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze (some of the Games competitors are pictured below, images from the International Youth Games - Lancaster Facebook page)

Badminton: 1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze

Rowing: 10 gold, 6 silver, 6 bronze

Swimming: 17 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze.

A spokesperson for the Lancaster team said: "We also had two leaders come away with gold medals (had to mention these apparently!)

"A special note that our swimmers topped the swimming medal table, even beating the host city, which is highly unusual.

"But well done to all participants, from every city. The medals are always nice, but the memories will last a whole lot longer than the medals!

"We would like to thank Rendsburg for a fantastic few days.

"We would like to thank all the organisers, host families, volunteers etc from Rendsburg, along with all the participants and leaders from other cities that make the Youth Games great!

"We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our participants for their excellent behaviour during this trip, and all the additional training they have done leading up towards this event, and not forgetting their parents for the time taken to ferry people around and the obvious financial support of the Games.

"Last, but not least, we must thank our amazing team of leaders and volunteers, who work all year round to make this one week special for all those that take part, and just a reminder, every single person involved in the team is a volunteer!

"Now we are home, we will start planning fro Aalborg 2025 (which is 50 years since the first Youth Games)!"
